“Okay, so, the employee directory, that’s your biggest lead right now?” Solveig asked.

Megan processed what that question meant as she sat across from Solveig at the desk, the folder between them.

It was her last chance to speak up, she realized. Could she really stomach handing this case off to someone else?

But her sister was good at her job. Maybe better than she was. And Megan knew she was very far from solving the case herself.

Megan finally nodded slowly. “Yeah. But we don’t have it yet. It's probably still at the marina, according to our source.”

Solveig nodded. One of her team of State Patrol officers, standing behind where she was seated, seemed to write that down on a notepad.

Megan wanted to trust her sister in this. By all accounts, she should, she knew. Solveig’s record was exceptional. But the truth was that it just didn’t feel right to give the case away. She had become attached to the victims and their families at that point. She wanted justice for them, and she wanted to be the one to get justice for them.

If Solveig was just a little bit more generous in cutting her in on things … but she knew that wasn’t how her sister worked. It never had been. She was a solo operator, and the people who were useful to her were assistants, subordinates—not partners. And there wasn’t anything wrong with that, Megan supposed, if it got results.

Still, though …

“Hey, S—” Megan started.

“And who of interest do you expect you might find listed on the directory?” Solveig said, interrupting her, seemingly without noticing, looking up from the contents of the evidence folder Megan had splayed out on the desk.

“Um, most likely people who worked there between January and March this year, but we’re also not ruling out ones who didn’t. Maybe people who could have indicated psychopathic tendencies. Anyone who would have been able to gather information about which ships in the marina have or haven’t been used by their owners for a long time. Anyone who might have sailing experience, specifically with tying knots. And anyone who might be in a position to somehow have access to snake venom.”

“Snake venom?” Solveig asked.

“Yeah. Killer’s MO.”

“Huh. Weird,” Solveig said. The officer standing behind her scribbled.

“But, um, Solveig …” Megan began.

“What’s up?” she asked neutrally, looking at her.

Megan faltered again, wondering for a second if she really should ask what she was about to ask. She would just be asking Solveig to follow official protocol, after all, to let her act in her capacity as the local lead. But would that still be asking too much of her sister? She had a method, Megan knew.

“Megan, c’mon,” Solveig preempted, as if reading her mind.

“I got this. You know me! You’ve done a lot of great work so far. I’m not really a two-heads-are-better-than-one sort of gal. Take a load off. I bet this has been really stressful for you.”

It had, but Megan still bristled a little at the condescension. She was strong enough for a case like this, that wasn’t the problem.
